- “Weed 'Em and Reap!”
- —Ambush's official catchphrase
Ambush is a Life Knight Sensei in Skylanders: Imaginators.
Character Development
According to character gameplay designer Nat Loh, Ambush easily has the most complicated animation set-up of any Skylander he has created. His fighting style was heavily influenced by Chinese Wushu martial arts. He has a series of wushu inspired stances that were originally mapped to be branching off points for different attack animation paths that would all loop back into one of the other cycles. However the amount of animations needed for this was just too many and the gameplay impact wasn't high enough, so the design was simplified while still maintaining that fun martial arts combat flow.
Ambush's secondary attack was based on Captain Yamato's mokuton no jutsu from the Naruto series. Nat Loh worked with AAA dust, lens flare, and flying trash creator Jerry Chan on trying different looks starting with wood based effects.[1] In development, his name was Weed Whacker.[2]
Background
Physical Traits
Ambush is a mystical anthropomorphic tree-knight, he wears a sleeveless vest while holding a glowing green sword. Like all master senseis, Ambush wears black and gold armor and has a golden karate belt tied around his waist.
Personality
Ambush is direct with his words, and is protective of nature.
Biography
There were many mysterious things in the Mystical Bamboo Forest, but none more so than Ambush. The forest was considered to be one of Skylands’ greatest natural wonders, and no outsider, good or bad, was ever permitted to trespass. But that didn’t stop Kaos’ mother! After deciding that the ancient trees would make an exquisite display in her Royal Courtyard, she commanded her army of chainsaw-wielding trolls to chop down the entire forest. This angered Ambush, the mystical tree-knight, who saw the atrocity and swore revenge! Wielding his mythic sword, he fought off the trolls and forced Kaos’ mother into hiding. When Master Eon heard the story, he knew that the mysterious sword master would make the ideal Sensei, and promised to “go green” himself if Ambush would join the Skylander team. Ambush now trains other Knights - and those who are not environmentally conscious cower in fear!
Gameplay
Ambush can hack and slash his enemies with his mythic sword. The sword can cause grass marks to grow on enemies, which will let it deal extra damage on later hits. Ambush can dash across the battlefield while causing bamboo shoots to erupt from behind him, finishing his dash with a shockwave of energy. He can even summon a field of sharp bamboo trees to erupt around him. His Sky-Chi allows him to focus his energy into a target symbol and mark enemies with it. After they are marked, Ambush dashes across the battlefield at lightning speed while slashing his enemies to deal great damage.

Trivia
- His catchphrase is a pun on the saying "Read 'em and weep!", a common brag used by poker players when revealing their hand.
- His upgrade path, "The Master Splinterer", could be a reference to the character Master Splinter from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, while his other upgrade path, "Go Go Forest Ranger", could be a reference to the phrase "Go Go Power Rangers!" from the Power Rangers franchise.
- His name means a long-established military tactic in which combatants take advantage of concealment and the element of surprise to attack unsuspecting enemy combatants from concealed positions, such as among dense underbrush or behind hilltops.
- Even though Ambush is a Tree Knight, his armour is similar in design to a ninja's outfit.
- Incidentally, his armour looks similar to Tuff Luck's armour, but with the addition of a fundoshi, a traditional Japanese loincloth.
- He shares the same voice actor as Hood Sickle, J. B. Blanc.
- He's the (only non-villain) Life Sensei to not be part of an Adventure pack.
- His Sky-Chi voice line "By the power of Sky-Chi!" could be a reference to the phrase "By the power of Grayskull!" from the Masters of the Universe franchise.
